- Try to pinpoint one key thing you wish to achieve with students and select software to match that aspiration
- Do not try to learn all of the features of the software at once
- At the start, concentrate on no more than one or two software titles
- Do not be afraid to place yourself in the role of ‘learner’ in front of students
- Before you purchase, ensure that the software is compatible with your operating system – e.g., Windows 2000 or XP, Mac OS X
- Read the software evaluation reviews, carried out by Irish teachers, at Software Central
- Enquire about a trial of software you might be interested in from your local ICT Advisor
- Some vendors will be happy to send you demo copies of software
- Some software companies offer downloadable trial versions – try their websites
- Beware of the ‘hard sell’ from some vendors
- Talk to other teachers at every opportunity
